I was super excited to find out that as a member of group 1B, there were vaccines available for my priority group. Working quickly, I was able to secure an appointment for myself, my elderly mother, and a high-risk sibling. Appointment confirmations in hand, we headed out to the vaccination clinic to receive our COVID-19 vaccines. Here are some of the top questions my friends and family asked me regarding the vaccine.

Did it hurt?

Yes. It was a shot. It hurt a little, and my arm was sore afterwards. My elderly mother said, “you know you’ve had a shot,” and I think that describes the level of pain very well- not debilitating, but noticeable.

Did it make you feel sick?

No. I have heard reports that people can feel pretty cruddy after the second shot, but I had no symptoms of illness after the first shot. I did, however, feel very fatigued and went to bed early the night following my vaccine. My mom and sister also reported feeling the same way.

Did you feel safe?

Yes. One of the concerns people have shared is potential exposure to COVID-19 while getting the immunization. My vaccine was administered in an indoor facility, but the people inside were limited, social distancing was enforced, and every person inside was properly wearing their mask the entire time I received my vaccine.

How long did it take?

I was one of three people in my family group, so my experience may have taken a little longer, but it took roughly 45 minutes from the time we got to the clinic to the time we left the building. A portion of that time was a mandatory 15-minute waiting period after receiving the vaccine. One nurse provided the vaccines to everyone in our group, so if I had gone by myself it probably would have taken about 30 minutes.

Positive results do not rule out co-infection with organisms not included in the Thermo Fisher TaqMan 2019-nCoV Assay Kit v1 and TaqMan 2019-nCoV Control Kit v1, TaqPath COVID-19 Combo Kit and/ or Panther Fusion®️ SARS-CoV-2 Assay Kit. The agent detected may not be the definite cause of this disease. This assay is for in vitro diagnostic use under the FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). This test is only authorized for the duration of time of the declaration and for the detection of SARSCoV-2 RNS virus and/or diagnosis of COVID-19 infection under section 564 (b)(1) of the act, 21 U.S.C.360bbb-3(b)(1) unless the authorization is terminated or revoked sooner.
Clarity Laboratory
Virokey SARS CoV-2 real time PCR assay for detection of SARS CoV-2 from nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal specimen was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Clarity Labs. The EUA approval #EU201790. This test is approved by CLIA, NJDOH and NYDOH. This test has been validated in accordance to FDA’s guidance document:”Policy for Diagnosis testing in laboratory verified to perform High complexity testing under CLIA prior to Emergency Use Authorization for Coronavirus disease-2019 during the public health emergency issued on February 29th 2020”.
