While it would be a mistake to suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic is over, it is fair to say that we are turning a corner on COVID-19 in New Jersey. As more and more people get vaccinated, Governor Phil Murphy will continue an accelerated opening of the state. Some businesses are expected to be opened as early as Monday May 10th. The reopening order has been great news for businesses and customers in New Jersey and signal a return to a semblance of normalcy.

Vaccinations have been one of the keys to an early reopening. The state has been very proactive in its vaccination program and is on target to reach its goal of 4.7 million vaccinations by the end of June. It also has plans to continue its vaccine program to continue to drive down transmission rates.

However, since vaccines are currently only approved for people 16 and above, and even the highly anticipated approval of vaccines for teens 12 to 15 will still miss a huge segment of the population, the reopenings are being handled cautiously.

For example, while the state is opening up sleepover camps for the summer, attendance will be based on a rigorous testing model. Campers and staff who are not vaccinated must be tested within 72 hours of starting camp and then tested again during the first 3 to 6 days of their session. Campers have to quarantine prior to going to camp, as well.

The Governor also suggested that New Jersey would be adopting CDC guidelines for outdoor masks. These new guidelines suggest that people who are two weeks after their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or their single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine can safely gather in small groups outside. He is also increasing indoor capacity for businesses.

Because COVID-19 guidelines should be based on science and data, these new orders could be subject to change if the trend reverses. This could be the case as summer travel means more people from New Jersey getting exposed to people from states with higher infection or transmission rates. However, for now the news is promising.

Clarity Laboratory
Virokey SARS CoV-2 real time PCR assay for detection of SARS CoV-2 from nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal specimen was developed and its performance characteristics determined by Clarity Labs. The EUA approval #EU201790. This test is approved by CLIA, NJDOH and NYDOH. This test has been validated in accordance to FDA’s guidance document:”Policy for Diagnosis testing in laboratory verified to perform High complexity testing under CLIA prior to Emergency Use Authorization for Coronavirus disease-2019 during the public health emergency issued on February 29th 2020”.
